The tradition of handing out glass hearts began in 2003 at Hackensack University Medical Center, Hackensack, NJ. Kathleen Taylor, then a chaplain, saw the need to help patients, family members and staff get through difficult times. Handing them a glass heart with the message, "This is to remind you that you are loved", seemed to make an impact.
Upon leaving the Medical Center, Kathleen continued the tradition at other places of employment and in her personal life. Some of the stories are so heartwarming they bring tears to people's eyes. Stay tuned for those stories - and think about telling us your story.
To date, Kathleen has personally handed out approximately 80,000 hearts around the world. Have you received one? Tell us how it has impacted you and, if you like, send us a picture of your heart in your hand. We will post it!
After two years of handing out hearts, this article was published in the employee newsletter.
